Catalog Description

Methionine is an essential amino acid and the precursor to S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), the body's principal methyl donor for DNA, protein, and neurotransmitter methylation reactions. It is also a precursor in the transsulfuration pathway leading to cysteine and glutathione synthesis.

Catalog descriptions reflect research context only. Not a medical claim or treatment recommendation.

Research Profile

Reported Research Side Effects

Data source: Primary literature, regulator records, trial registries, and identity-specific evidence search

Reflects preclinical/research literature context only. Not a medical claim, dosing instruction, or treatment recommendation.

Route-Specific Research Protocols

Amounts and schedules are separated by administration route. Evidence badges distinguish labels, human studies, preclinical work, community reports, and evidence gaps.

Label / guideline Human study Community only Preclinical only Not established
Oral Human study only

500 mg

Frequency / timing
Three times daily
Duration / setting
4 weeks
Technique
Oral research
Evidence
Human intervention study

Context: Randomized placebo-controlled crossover study in women with chronic urinary tract infection and healthy controls

Formulation: Oral-mucosal formulations are not dose-equivalent to injectable or topical formulations.

Route safety: Study exposure, not a general supplementation recommendation. Plasma homocysteine increased during supplementation.

Oral Human study only

1 g twice daily (phase 1); 2 g twice daily (phase 2)

Frequency / timing
Twice daily
Duration / setting
12 weeks at 1 g twice daily, then 8 weeks at 2 g twice daily
Technique
Oral tablets/capsules in a randomized trial
Evidence
Human intervention study

Context: Randomized controlled hot-flash study in postmenopausal women

Formulation: Oral study product; participants also received folate and methylcobalamin.

Route safety: Study exposure, not a general supplementation recommendation. Methionine raised serum homocysteine despite co-supplementation.

Do not convert an amount between routes. Bioavailability, formulation, sterility, monitoring, and clinical context differ by route. Research-use context only; independently verify every cited source.

Research Notes

Methionine is essential, but excess isolated intake can raise homocysteine depending on folate, B12, and B6 status. Acetaminophen-antidote use outside the U.S. is a separate drug context.

Supplementary research context only. Not medical advice or a treatment recommendation.
