Catalog Description

Ivermectin is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent derived from avermectins produced by Streptomyces avermitilis. FDA-labeled oral tablet indications include intestinal strongyloidiasis caused by Strongyloides stercoralis and onchocerciasis caused by Onchocerca volvulus. It acts primarily on invertebrate glutamate-gated chloride channels, producing hyperpolarization and paralysis of susceptible parasites. The drug has no activity against adult Onchocerca volvulus parasites. Ivermectin has not been FDA-approved for prevention or treatment of COVID-19.

Context: Dose figures reflect ranges commonly cited in performance/clinical literature and community reports, not a recommended protocol. This compound is typically prescription-only or requires medical supervision; entry is provided as a pharmacology reference only.

Formulation: Route-specific formulation and handling requirements apply.

Route safety: Reference range only. Do not treat as an individualized or clinically established protocol.

Source status: No direct community citation is attached to this amount.

Do not convert an amount between routes. Bioavailability, formulation, sterility, monitoring, and clinical context differ by route. Research-use context only; independently verify every cited source.

Research Notes

This record is a pharmacology and reference entry, not a treatment protocol. FDA-labeled oral tablet information reports approved indications for intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, including reference regimens of a single 200 micrograms/kg dose for intestinal strongyloidiasis and 150 micrograms/kg for onchocerciasis; these are reported label regimens, not personalized dosing advice. Human studies have also evaluated other schedules and routes, but those findings should not be generalized to self-administration or unapproved uses.

Supplementary research context only. Not medical advice or a treatment recommendation.

Registry Identifiers

CAS RN 70288-86-7; PubChem compound record for ivermectin mixture; component empirical formulas C48H74O14 (B1a) and C47H72O14 (B1b).

Source-Backed Observations

Ivermectin is a mixture of closely related avermectin homologs rather than a single discrete molecular species. Human oral tablet labeling describes a plasma half-life of approximately 18 hours, peak plasma concentrations at approximately 4 hours after a single 12 mg dose in fasting healthy volunteers, hepatic metabolism, and predominantly fecal elimination. A high-fat meal increased ivermectin bioavailability in a labeled pharmacokinetic study.
